LITERACY

Children’s literacy and authorship

I am passionate about literacy, because literacy is the door through which we gain agency over our own lives.

In 2019 I began writing my debut children’s book The Krewe of Barkus and Meoux after my commander asked me, “If you weren’t in the Air Force, what would you be doing?”

I immediately answered, “I would create picture books.”

As I illustrated my story in 2020 and pitched to publishers in 2021, I wondered what the impact of the pandemic would be to student learning, and I felt galvanized to DO SOMETHING.

  • To create stories with a deep sense of purpose.
  • To paint in service to a higher joy.
  • To write with an understanding that words are powerful and can shape who we are, and what we believe ourselves capable of.

I will not stand by knowing the pandemic negatively impacted national literacy rates amongst our nation’s children.

So, I grabbed a pen and brush and got to work.

My mission is to support educators in the classroom and parents at home by writing and illustrating beautiful stories for children that bring their imaginations to life.

Curiosity is the twin to creativity, and if we can inspire it through imagination, we open all doors to learning.

Debut Children’s Book

The Krewe of Barkus and Meoux

Her debut children’s picture book The Krewe of Barkus and Meoux was inspired by the Mardi Gras pet parade of the same name.

After writing the story in rhyme, Bones drew and painted the story of the Krewes raucously dance-battling their way through the French Quarter of New Orleans. Instead of taking a traditional approach to color and lighting within the art, Bones utilized color to visually represent jazz music being played as the Krewes parade their way to victory. “Easter eggs” are hidden throughout the book, including a mouse in each illustration, a “blues” cat (as a nod to the foundation of jazz) and much more.

 Why write books?

As a military brat, Bones moved extensively as a child and remembers the biting loneliness she felt when somewhere new with no friends. Literature offered reprieve from the loneliness, and so she believes strongly in the power of stories to heal. As a result, children’s literacy is another area where Bones pursues her art and writing. Her first children’s book, The Krewe of Barkus and Meoux, was released by Pelican Publishing in time for the 2023 Mardi Gras season. Bones finds great joy in visual storytelling and hopes her stories cultivate the same belonging she found as a child sitting nervous and alone at a lunch table, nose in a book.

Collaboration

Art-O-Mat

In 2022 I became an official Art-O-Mat artist and released my first collection titled “3 Cats and the Aquarium Scarium!”

Art-O-Mat machines are retired cigarette vending machines which have been converted to vend art!

My first Art-O-Mat collection was featured in the Shreveport Regional Arts Council Critical Mass 10 Exhibition, and showcased four original works of narrative art.
